Hillary Bedell- Our 2011-2012 Jesuit Volunteer
Ms. Bedell grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, OH and is graduate of Allegheny College (Meadville, PA) who studied Biology and Environmental Health. She is part of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps--a service organization in which recent college graduates work full time for justice and peace. JVC is a national organization committed to the Church's mission of promoting justice in the service of faith, and its members live by four core values--social justice, spirituality, community, and simple living. She clearly stated in her application to work at CAP, “All through my life, my family, schooling, and faith have taught me to desire to be a woman living for others. I would like to emulate this vision for myself in all aspects of my life---career, family, hobbies, etc. Living as a Jesuit Volunteer by actively promoting social justice and by working full time for structural change in the United States, reflects the woman I strive to be.” Ms. Bedell is CAP’s technology teacher and librarian, and she also helps out with the ELL classes. She has previously worked at Head Start and volunteered in elementary schools, so she was ready and willing to learn new curriculums and take on many extra responsibilities for the development of our Parish School. She is a blessing!!
Jesuit Novices
The novitiate is the first stage of Jesuit formation and novices begin to learn through experience about the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience as lived in a community setting. He learns the traditions, rules and expectations of the Society of Jesus. During this time he makes the Spiritual Exercises in a 30-day retreat and engages in a variety of “experiments,” such as serving the poor, the elderly, and teaching children. At the end of the two years, he pronounces perpetual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience either as a brother or as a scholastic who will prepare for priestly ordination.
